BROKECHELLA MEDIA ALERT III

BROKECHELLA 2013 ANNOUNCES OFFICIAL BLOCK PARTY STATUS, TWO NEW HEADLINERS, HAPPY HOUR, SET TIMES, VENDORS, FOOD, GREEN INITIATIVE AND MORE

BROKECHELLA: TAKIN’ IT TO THE STREETS

We weren’t lying when we said we were bringing you the biggest BROKECHELLA yet. We’re excited to announce that this year we’ll not only be returning to the awesome SIX01 Studios, but we’ll be closing off THE ENTIRE STREET next to it to make room for our THIRD STAGE. That’s right - we’re taking over our little section of DTLA and turning it into an all day fun-in-the-let’s-hope-for-sun block party with a giant Carlsberg outdoor bar, art installations, and “Vendor Row” full of our favorite LA eats and pop-up shops, and much more. The party starts at 4 PM!

TEAMSUPREME HEADLINING SHIFTY RHYTHMS STAGE

Forty weeks ago on a balmy So Cal evening, Alpha Pup artists Preston Walker (of Virtual Boy) and Great Dane (newly signed) challenged each other to a game: produce a one-minute beat in one hour, using a set BPM and sample from the Notorious B.I.G. Sixty minutes later two new tracks were created, and TeamSupreme was born. Combining playtime and practice, the idea of TeamSupreme soon spread across the flat, freeway-laden land of LA, with producers clamoring to get in on the action and be a part of the exciting beat experiment. Uniting artists from not only LA but also New York, Colorado and Hawaii, TeamSupreme evolved organically into a weekly beat challenge. Every Monday one of the participating artists picks a BPM and two samples, one transition sound and one remix. With the original time constraints relaxed, the producers must then create a one-minute track in one week, the results of which are merged into a weekly podcast and played out in a monthly event.

BUDDY JOINING BROWNIES AND LEMONADE STAGE

Buddy (born Simmie Sims) is a rapper from Compton, California with personality for days. Battling it out in the LA entertainment scene at industry showcases since he was a child, he eventually caught the attention of Pharrell Williams after an introduction by his co-manager Scott Vener (former music director of Entourage). Buddy’s debut track “Awesome Awesome,” produced by the Neptunes, is full of stomping beats and slick word play and reflects his fresh approach to hip hop. He’s already recorded collaborations with Snoop Dogg and Kendrick Lamar (“Staircases”) and is completing his mixtape, Idle Time. officialbuddy.com

PUPPY VIDEOS

Art curator Elenore Kody combined her love of art and dogs (she takes care of countless dogs around the city who don’t have homes yet!) and created these fun Brokechella promo videos. (No dogs were harmed or actually listened to working headphones, in the making of these videos!)

I am a certified dog trainer and owner of Golden Heart Animal Rescue. I train, rehabilitate, and care for dogs in Los Angeles, and most of the dogs in the videos are all dogs I am currently working with. I am often amused by the silly things dogs do, and so I thought it would be fun to show dogs listening to different bands on our lineup. Link, the dog who is sporting the “cone of shame” in the yOya video will be available for adoption after he recuperates, so maybe we can get him some attention as well!” - Eleanore Kody

Supporter Shout Out:

BROKECHELLA is proud to have the support of Contributing Sponsor Grow Music Project, dedicated to nurturing musical talent at no cost to the artist. Why do they do it? “When we got our start in the music business, some very nice people did something similar for us, and we think it’s our turn to do something cool…Something that builds an actual community based around great music, one that creates ongoing connections and opportunities for it’s members, and not one that you have to ultimately pay a dollar here or there to be a part of.  And something that’s more about the love of discovering great new artists and songs, and less about making money from them.”

cARTel: Collaborative Arts LA

As you might have noticed, we do a lot of stuff. A lot. We bring locals together through boundary-pushing arts events and highly collaborative, ensemble-driven productions. We fill our audiences and our casts with people who are not interested solely in performing or solely in watching, but rather in sharing the experience of art with one another. We look to empower both long time and beginner artists by providing inspiring opportunities to create and perform, diverse and affordable workshops, and dynamic venues to meet and engage with like-minded visionaries. We believe that a community alive with art will thrive with conversation and understanding, and progress. Art conversing with people conversing with people conversing with art.

“cARTel is a multi-media, multi-discipline production company that doesn’t just put on shows, they put on EXPERIENCES. Attending a cARTel event means every one of your senses will be engaged. You’ll be eating, drinking, laughing, crying, seeing, hearing, and touching their PRODUCTION…Anything cARTel is the place to be.”

-LA Travel Bug

BROKECHELLA 2012

What I loved most about the event besides the awesome up-and-coming musicians (Das Tapes especially), was the interactive art mural, unlimited drinks as lovable VIPs, and just meeting awesome nice people! By the way, Daren Criss from GLEE was apparently in attendance as was a spongebob squarepants pinata. There was never a moment during the evening that I didn’t enjoy an artist’s music!”

- Before The Bigs

“It was crazy fun and chill at the same time. It was a bunch of people in a warehouse getting free stuff and getting photographed and dancing to random LA bands that should be crazy famous but aren’t and eating and drinking. Big thanks to Cartel: Collaborative Arts L.A. for putting together such a creative and spirited event.”

-Apocalypstick

SOUND/STAGE

Sound/Stage presents a narrative-driven, lightly staged radio play delivered by charismatic performers, engrossing live music…and a red-carpet style garden party with tuxedoed musicians…The performers simply and effectively craft a colorful, reminiscent story….Under the direction of Singh, “Unplugged in the Amazon” feels like a dreamy elixir for the ears”

-LAist

FORT

“cARTel brought this evening of whimsical, interactive fancy to life..”

-LA Weekly

“This was a creative, unique, and inspired event, definitely recapturing the joy of childhood in adult-style…fans can count on more “boundary-pushing” events from these visionaries in the future”

-So Cal Magazine

LIVING ROOM TOUR

“…Intimate, pioneering, conceptually brilliant… one of the best productions we’ve seen this year.”

-LAist

BROKECHELLA 2011

“There was face painting, regular painting, and even an outdoor art gallery. There were also drink specials, comedy acts, and DJs galore. Seriously, [we] had ourselves a good ‘ole time on the cheap. We had so much fun that, Coachella or not, we already plan to be at next year’s “Brokechella.”

-Wifey of a Roadie

Paper Mag has this to say about Brokechella 2013 band Body Parts’ new video:

There are two pretty remarkable things worth mentioning about the video for “Rest While you Sleep”by L.A.-based, self-described “experimental pop” band Body Parts: 1) the clip was filmed on location (no green screens) in Death Valley, Santa Cruz and Venice Beach, places that provide backdrops as dramatic as those that you’ll find on a Planet Earth DVD for 2) band members Ryder Bach and Alina Cutrono to practice… tai-chi.

Here’s the not-so-secret secret about a multi-day music festival in the desert: It’s a multi-day music festival in the desert.

Which means a few things from the get-go. One? You have to get to the desert, and possibly stay in the desert, which probably will take some cash, or at least you cleaning out your aunt’s garage or washing your friend’s car in some sort of barter-type situation.

Brokechella, April 20 at Six01 Studios (601 S. Anderson St.). Cost: $10. Now in its third edition, this downtown festival celebrates underground up-and-comers and affordability. It won’t be as polished as its VIP-saturated inspiration, but it will be just as diverse, with selections that include the melodic rock of the Dead Ships, the vampy weirdness of Kera and the Lesbians and a head-trip of a hip-hop artist in NoCanDo.

Los Angeles, CA. March 20th, 2013: cARTel Collaborative Arts LA, in conjunction with Carlsberg, Bedrock and Jarritos, are proud to announce the line up for the 2013 Arts & Music festival, returning to Six01 Studios in DTLA on April 20th, 2013, doors at 4pm. The one day extravaganza in the spirit of  the festival none of us could afford will feature over 30 musical acts, the best of Los Angeles street food, festival encompassing art installations, dirt cheap drinks, photo booth, face painting, gift bags, and new for 2013, boutique vendors, “Broke” merchandise, games, and more — all minus the sweltering sun and prohibitive price tag.

This year, Brokechella will host returning acts electronic folk duo yOya, who will be celebrating the launch of their new album, and pop-soul inflicted garage rockers the Dead Ships, as well as eight bands new to the cARTel stage. These Los Angeles staples represent a variety of the city’s most thriving genres. This year, we welcome up and coming post-punk female duo TÜLIPS, rockin’ live wire trio you can’t help but guzzle a beer to, Manhattan Murder Mystery, the bi-polar folk with hints of back alley blues band, Kera & the Lesbians, melodic 60s fuzz rock n rollers, Hello Echo, throwback quartet saturated in vocal harmonies, King Washington, the intellectually demanding yet imminently danceable band taking LA by storm, Body Parts, the 90’s R&B meets New Jack Swing meets the future, electronic artists Mystery Skulls, and the space-funk electro-gospel dance til you can dance no more show stoppers Planet Booty.

Not a group to stay stagnant, cARTel aims to expand Brokechella this year by collaborating with LA music powerhouses Shifty Rhythms and Brownies & Lemonade to curate our second and third stages, which will feature acts including Mann the artist behind “Buzzin” ft 50 Cent, Timbaland produced MC Shawn Crystopher, Vindata, Cy Kosis, and special guests yet to be announced.

This year’s festival wide art installation will focus on the theme of “Strange Paradise.” The festival is still accepting artist submissions. cARTel is also partnering with our 2013 supporters to create themed monoliths that will decorate the space.

BROKECHELLA is a proud recipient of an Awesome Foundation Grant. Not only will funds help support the growth of the festival, but cARTel is actively working with the Foundation to help broaden the opportunities for young producers.

The festival will also feature unique activities for attendees that make an effort to stay green - expect recycling bins that double as art pieces and games plus LED lights and recycled/sustainable materials in all the artwork.

For the next 5 days, tickets are available for $5 as part of our Early Broke Bird special program running March 21-26. After this, general admission will be $10.

Details on additional stages, vendors, activities, happy hour, special deals for staying responsible & sustainable and more will be announced in the coming weeks.
